Mama Soh started her baking journey over 30 years ago, to bring joy and nourishment to her growing family of six (now all grown up with families of their own). Her home was always filled with the fragrance of Pandan and other delights as her children brought friends over to savour their mother's delicious treats. Now that the kids (and friends) are all grown, they still relish in Mama Soh's many delights and the nostalgia of childhood memories and tastes.
Mama Soh had never sold her cakes, baking only for love and passion. One of her most popular cakes with family and friends was the Pandan Chiffon cake. Inevitably, this was the most popular by request cake for parties and family gatherings, and Mama Soh would bake and gift it away.
Sadly, three years ago, Mama Soh's husband of fifty years passed away suddenly. This was a very difficult time for her and the family, and it left her with a huge sense of loss. They were extremely close and losing her life partner so suddenly didn't give her time to prepare. They had celebrations and trips planned, tickets booked, people to visit, conversations yet to have. The sadness worsened as the months turned into years as she withdrew and slowly fell into a cycle of sitting in front of the TV for most of the day. The mental deterioration and spirit dimming was the hardest to watch.
Earlier this year, her youngest daughter, Andrea and family moved back from the USA, and they saw how depressed their mother was, especially during the challenging Circuit Breaker period. She decided to have Mama Soh bake again for a few close friends to give her mother something to do. Her daughter's friends ordered the cakes they remembered from young and Mama Soh's little home baked business started to blossom, one cake at a time (as did Mama Soh's spirit).
Soon the orders started coming through a few close friends, social media and word-of-mouth (and taste). Mama Soh had more cake orders than she could ever imagine.
Now that this modest start-up has given her a renewed focus, she enthusiastically wakes at 5am every morning, with a sparkle in her eye and apron around her waist. It sounds simple, but finding her purpose again and pouring her immense love and talents back into baking has taken her off the couch, and back into the kitchen to share her famous GIANT Pandan Chiffon.
